A COLLECTIVE
Collective (cltv)… A collective is a cooperative enterprise – something done by people who share or are motivated by at least one common interest and harmoniously and industriously work together to achieve a common objective. A collective will develop its own set of ideals and vision in successful pursuit of the common objective. A collective relies upon valuable and meaningful member contribution, pooled resources, shared knowledge and skills, promotion and support.

HAND MADE
Hand-Made (hmd)... The first recorded definition of hand-made appears in British records circa 1605. It was simply this… “an item made by hand or by a hand process.” We have evolved since then and we’re all aware of the robust debates about what should and shouldn’t be considered a hand-made item. For example, a seamstress makes a beautiful evening dress wherein she uses her hands to complete much of the work, especially the finer detail but she uses a sewing machine to bring it together as one piece. Is that dress hand-made?

Objects like sewing machines, and even mouse cursors are just tools, just like knitting needles, and pottery knives. The tool doesn’t do the work. It’s the artist's skill with the tool that does the work. An artist uses that tool to create something. It still takes enormous skill and time and the artist’s trained eye to transform objects from the mundane into art.

Some online communities state that the terms "hand-assembled" and "hand-altered" are acceptable and synonymous with “hand-made.” Those words insinuate that though the fundamental materials weren't built from scratch, the seller has added his or her own twist to the product. There even exists a running debate about hand-made as opposed to hand-crafted. It all becomes very convoluted.

A very strict line we draw in demarcation is the obvious difference between hand-made and mass produced machine made items. Identifying one from the other doesn’t require any skill or too much common sense at all. Mass produced does not become hand-made just because someone turned a machinery switch from off to on or placed their own branding sticker on some item or object. In very simple terms, we all know what 'true' hand-made is.

So, it is very difficult to be totally definitive about “hand-made.” And so, we need to rely upon a good dose of common sense and the integrity of our sellers when it comes to hand-made. At Vipers we believe hand-made can be defined by original ideas, designs, and creation with or without the tools that may be necessary in order to give the item or object it’s final appreciative “look and feel.”

VINTAGE
Vintage (vntg)… Items that are 20 years old or greater, but not more than 100 years old, are considered vintage. The critical date used in determining vintage items is 1st January each calendar year. If an item was made on or before 1st January 2011 it becomes vintage on 1st January 2020. Vintage items can be comprised of new items, restored or refurbished items and used items.

NEW OLD STOCK
New Old Stock (nos)... Please refer to vintage above. Although becoming rarer it is not so unusual either for some sellers to have items dating back into the early 20th Century, or even the late 19th century, that are brand new and unused.

ANTIQUE
Antique (antq)… An antique is a collectible object such as, but not limited to, a piece of furniture, work of art, chiming clock or other object that has a high value because of its considerable age. Generally, an antique object is one considered to be of at least 100 years of age. However, this criterion is not always applicable or adhered to. Antique items can be comprised of new items, restored or refurbished items and used items, as is the case with vintage items.

COLLECTIBLE
Collectible (ctbl)… A collectible is typically any object that is able to be collected and that people collect as a hobby or an investment. The object might have no intrinsic value to anyone other than the collector. It may be a work of fine art or an antique of some considerable value. Collectibles now include a wide variety of items and objects and any class of things considered to be worth collecting, that can be collected, and that people collect as a hobby, or for commercial gain, but not necessarily being of great intrinsic value. In short a collectible is anything suitable or desirable for collecting by any person for almost any reason.
